In art history, the female gaze refers to the perspective of female artists and spectators, offering a contrast to the male gaze, which traditionally objectifies women. It emphasizes showing women as complex subjects with agency rather than passive objects, allowing for deeper emotional connection and self-expression for both the artist and viewer. While initially associated with female filmmakers, the concept has expanded to encompass any artistic representation, including visual arts, that challenges patriarchal narratives and focuses on women's subjective experiences and perspectives.
